The first Russian Navy base, Taganrog was officially founded by Peter the Great on September 12, 1698 and hosted the Azov Flotilla of Catherine the Great (1770–1783). This flotilla subsequently became the Russian Black Sea Fleet. The image of the city and its people is featured in numerous Anton Chekhov works.

In 834 year it was a Khazar fortress Sarkel, in 965 Prince Svyatoslav of Kiev destroyed it, and founded the Russian fortress of White Tower. In more recent times, seven kilometres from the old location has arisen new Tsimla. Since 1672 it is known as the Cossack village of Ust-Tsimla later Tsimlyanskaya village. It is very famous as the Cradle of the Don winemaking.

The Curonian Spit is a 98 km long, thin, curved sand-dune spit that separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea coast. Its southern portion lies within Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia and its northern within southwestern Lithuania. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site shared by the two countries.
